Special Olympics has a vision to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. Every year Special Olympics host a fundraiser to one brings awareness to the cause and to raise money. As a student at Overton, I am very impressed with this organization because it helps the athletic gain confidence, help them not feel alone, and basically make them feel loved. At my school, students make it their business to make sure the athletes are alright. There is one student Alex Hancock, she is very known around the school. She has a smile that helps you that will help you never think about that problem ever again. People like Alex, helps you look past the disabilities they may have and help gain life time friendships. Every year my school hosts a fundraiser named “Polar Bear Plunge”. Each school is to raise $2,000 and different teachers jump into the Mississippi River. Every year it’s a big hype because we all are excited and anxious about who is jumping in the river we have Cassandra Morgan, Pamela McKinley, Trace Hart, Kendra Martin, Michael Hoots, Shannon Marszalek, Tina Lee, and Stein Lee pictured. There are several ways we raise $2,000. We sell hats, hoodies, shirts, and general donations.
